Hello! Welcome to my portfolio my English for Sciences classes. My name is Fargana Abden and I’m a freshman here at City College of New York (well sophomore now that the semester is over). This portfolio shows the papers I’ve done throughout the semester and overall here’s my reflection for taking this class. 

At the beginning of the spring semester, I was excited about this class because it wasn’t an ordinary English class, it was focusing on sciences which is great for science majors. Before taking this class, I wasn’t really exposed to different writing but after taking this class I’ve been exposed and now have more experiences with different types of essays. Some works I’ve done for this class are a Litterature Review, Position Paper, Corona Virus Assignment, and we had to respond to at least 5 discussion posts based on articles. 

One of my best works was the Literature Review. It was challenging to find peer-reviewed articles based on a topic I was writing which I’ve never done before but I got the hang of it eventually. In addition, my position paper was one of the most informative paper I had to do. I talked about the cost of prescription drugs in the United States. I chose this topic because in the United States the cost of prescription drugs has been increasing and it’s affecting a lot of people. Medications are the most common health care intervention and have a significant benefit on the health of individuals and the population. Writing this paper helped me understand and see different ways of how America can maintain the price of prescription drugs. 

Furthermore, this class was helping me understand and learn from my fellow peers as well. As mentioned before, in class we had to complete at least five discussion posts based on scientific articles. This not only helped me understand and get useful information from my peers, but I was able to see different points of view from one article. We also discussed the importance of grammar and went in-depth with it by going over examples which helped me a lot because I struggle with grammar a lot. So having the peers and proffesor help, I can say my grammar has improved and so has my writing. 

Overall, I’m grateful for taking this class because it helped with my writing skills a lot. I know the skills I learned will be beneficial for my sciences class such as Biology or Chemistry. I’m not a great writer but this class has opened my writing skills more than ever and gave me a more open mind for writing assignments. These assignments caught my attention and doing this assignment was fun. Also the professor was amazing. He gave great suggestions on my paper, had very engaging conversations on articles with not only the professor but the class as a whole and overall made this class fun.
